Changing the engine oil in your German car—like a BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, or Mercedes-Benz—is simple once you know where everything goes and use the right parts.
Here is a quick, step-by-step guide on where to drain dirty oil, where to pour fresh synthetic oil, and which OEM-approved filter kits to use for maximum engine life.
1. What You Need for the Job
European engines have strict approval standards (like SAE 5W-40, SN/CF 5W-40, MERCEDES MB 229.5). Using cheap or generic oil can harm your turbocharger or engine components.
-
Premium Synthetic Engine Oil: We recommend high-performance European oils like MERCEDES AMG SAE 5W-40, Motul 8100 X-CLEAN GEN2, or SCHAEFFLER 5W-40.
-
OEM-Quality Oil Filter Kit: Choose exact-fit cartridges from Mann-Filter, Mahle, or Hengst (includes fresh O-rings and drain plug washer).
-
Oil Catch Pan: A shallow tub to catch used oil.
-
Oil Filter Socket & Wrench: A 32mm/36mm socket for plastic engine filter caps and a basic wrench for the drain plug.
2. Step-by-Step: Where Things Go
Where Everything Is Located
Park on flat ground and run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes so the oil warms up and drains smoothly. Turn off the ignition, set the parking brake, and raise the front wheels using secure ramps or jack stands.
Crawl underneath the engine bay and locate the oil pan bolt (the drain plug). Place your drain pan directly underneath, unscrew the bolt with your socket wrench, and allow the dirty oil to drain completely.
Once dripping stops, replace the old crush washer with the new copper or aluminum washer included in your filter kit. Tighten the drain plug back into the pan to manufacturer torque specs.
Open your hood and locate the black oil filter housing cap. Unscrew it using your filter socket. Pull out the old filter cartridge, clean the housing cap, replace the rubber O-rings with new ones from your kit, insert your fresh Mann-Filter or Mahle filter, and screw the cap back on tight (~25 Nm).
Locate the oil cap on top of your valve cover (marked with an oil can symbol). Twist off the cap, place a funnel inside, and pour in your fresh Liqui Moly or Motul synthetic oil to the volume specified in your owner’s manual. Twist the cap back on securely.
Start the engine for 1 minute to let oil circulate, checking underneath for leaks. Turn off the car and verify your oil level using the dipstick or through your dashboard menu (iDrive / MMI). Finish by resetting your oil service interval on the dash display!
Quick Rules for European Engines
-
Check the Manufacturer Approval: Always make sure the oil canister explicitly states your car's specification code on the back (e.g., Liqui Moly Special Tec LL or Motul Spec 504.00).
-
Always Replace the O-Rings: High oil pressure in German engines will leak if old, hardened rubber O-rings are reused.
